Step Going
Step Going is a free, downloadable application software program for Android devices that allows users to track their fitness progress by measuring and tracking the number of flights of stairs they have completed. It also includes the ability to share a user’s progress with other Step users online.
In staircase construction, the term ‘going’ refers to the depth of each tread measured from front to back, excluding the thickness of the tread. It is often used in conjunction with the term rise, which measures the vertical distance between each successive tread, to determine the shape of a staircase between floors. Building regulations usually set out minimum and maximum values for both rise and going, which are required to afford reasonable safety to people navigating them.
A spiral staircase is a type of stairway which changes direction in a spiral, allowing stairs to fit where they would not otherwise. It is also a common way of creating privacy in upper level rooms, as visitors downstairs cannot easily see upstairs.
The word'staircase' may also be used to describe any vertical route between levels in a building, whether or not it is actually comprised of steps. In general, it is the term most commonly used for an enclosed structure containing multiple stairs. Staircases may be made from wood, stone, metal or a combination of materials and may feature open or closed risers. If closed, the steps are joined together by balusters or stringers; if open, the steps are separated by a handrail (or occasionally a kneerail). In either case the height between each floor, or landing, is typically calculated as the sum of the individual rises.
